Exploring 21st Century Learning

C

The kids today are different compared to the elder generation, it is said that the kids react while the elder generation reflects. There are 6 critical elements for 21st century learners, 3 key learning skills, and 21st century content that are mentioned within the scope of the topic. During the discussion, there was a thorough opinion that was asked from the students regarding the 21st century setting and most of the answers includes that there is advancement in technology nowadays.

E

During our Educ 02 subject, we were taught how to use the MS Publisher that mainly involves a lot of categories like making certificates, letters, brochures, and etc. The MS Publisher can be considered as one of the most useful tool that could enhance the creativity of a student, considering the application by means of technology. By means of using the MS Publisher and learning hands-on, I was able to accomplish to exploring the wonders of the 21st century learning.

R

In the 21st century learning there are a variety of strategies that could somehow enhance the academic performance of the students. The strategies include the usage of online resources that includes the use of Google for example as a search tool for students to further dig in respective topics. Also, YouTube as a means of locating different educational videos that would provide additional knowledge about a certain topic. These examples are very effective for learning to become more efficient and it’s up to the teacher’s guidance that students would learn appropriately and correctly. The learning should take place in a form of a process and guidance rather than letting the students do things without knowledge independently.

A

As a plan of action, in the future I would be applying the use of MS Programs like: PowerPoint that will serve as my key presenting the discussion, Publisher as their hands-on activity to develop creativity, and Excel to compute their grades. It would be very important for them to experience operating the computer by themselves, so I will be conducting various activities that will let them use computers and internet. I will also let my learners explore 21st century learning by introducing to them various educational games that would aid mastery in different subjects like English and Math. When it comes to Science, I will present videos so that they could fully understand each process that each topic involves.  Thus, the use of technology will be the center of my instructional material that could make my students relate and understand deeper the subject.

E

Exploring 21st century learning mainly involves the process of using technology as a means to teaching students and achieves learning outcomes. By the advancement of technology, both teacher and students could benefit to the advancement of technology which is basically the heart of the21st century learning. With such action, one could assure that by applying technology in everyday discussion the students could relate and further understand the topic for respective subjects.

I.N Entry 2

Understanding 21st Century Learners

C

The 21st century learners use educational technology in order to aid their knowledge about certain topics. Most of the time, they rely on computers and internet as a source of their learning and often lacks the skills in critical thinking due to the presence of technology. During the discussion, there was a raise of opinions by the audience that says the 21st Century learners are becoming too dependent in the use of technology as their means of studying lessons that often times they forgot the importance of books.

E

My little brother who is 7 years old, already master how to use different gadgets like computer, laptop, tablet and cellphones. He enjoys playing games and always loves to spend most of his time playing. I noticed that he’s not into reading books but mostly enjoys watching movie online and even learns most of his subject in the computer.

R

Due to the lack of psychomotor skills that is supposed to be the very important ingredient for a learning outcome, it would be better to involve the use of computers and combining psychomotor activities. With these, learners could stand and move, not just merely sitting and facing computers. Applying activities involving psychomotor skills would be very helpful to determine if a learner was able to mentally and physically understand/apply the topic.

A

As a future educator, I would use both technology and psychomotor skills to enhance my learners’ understanding of the topic. I will not just let them do hands-on facing the computers but I will let them involve in a collaborative work where they will be grouped and will work as a team. I will also be guiding them as to what the instruction would be, thus making sure that they first understood the mechanics before letting them do the work. Because they are the 21st century learners, I will put more effort for them to really understand the subject matter by means of any strategy that I can apply as a teacher. Therefore, involving psychomotor skills would also be an effective way of teaching the 21st century learners.

E

The 21st century learners are prone to rely on computers and technology as a source for their learning. In developing their knowledge, students mostly miss the chance to enhance their critical thinking skills. Thus, relying too much to computer and internet would lead to a lack of psychomotor skills.

I.N Entry 3

Integrating Technology and Media into Instruction: the ASSURE Model

C

The ASSURE model is an acronym that has it’s respective definition by initials, it encompasses the following definitions: Analyze learners by knowing their characteristics and State standards and objectives in order to know what learning outcome is expected to the student to achieve. Select strategies, media and materials to create effective lessons that support learning with its appropriate use and Utilize technology, media and materials that would help teachers to prepare, preview and provide the learning experience. Require learning participation wherein student should experience and be able to reflect and lastly, to Evaluate and revise which provides assessment to measure their understanding.

E

During the reporting session, I was able to experience making the ASSURE model that was given as an assignment. It was a facilitation plan in the form of ASSURE model and I worked with my group mates. The ASSURE model integrates technology, media and materials in the lessons intended for the students to learn easily that is a very good way of teaching.

R

The ASSURE model follows a step by step process which helps the educators determine the students characteristics, strengths and weaknesses. With the presence of the ASSURE model one could easily identify suited activity that best depicts one character or behavior.  In the application of suggesting an ASSURE model design, it would be best if the teacher would first look at the rubric very well so he/she may be guided according to the what’s and how’s. In selecting technology and media it is very important to find considerations into its advantages, limitations and integration.

A

In the future, I will try to use the ASSURE model for it’s very effective. I will always consider the selection rubrics so that the technology and media that I will use in the class is the best and is very efficient. I will also make sure that my students are actively participating and cooperate in every activity. Lastly, I will provide assessments to measure how much they gain from the lesson and for me to know what those things are I need to improve and work on.

E

Therefore the ASSURE model is very efficient to the teachers in creating a good lesson plan. It is also very beneficial to the students for the fact that this will serve as guide for them to aid their needs. And this type of model is connected to the 21st century learning that will surely be a great help for the learners.

I.N Entry 4

Achieving 21st Century Learning Environments

C

The 21st century learning environment involves a teacher centered or student centered strategy, wherein the teacher in teacher centered strategies could use a presentation, demonstration, drill-and-practice and tutorials. On the other hand, a student centered strategy is very engaging for it involves meaningful activities such as the discussion, cooperative learning, games, simulations, discovery and problem solving. During the discussion, each of the students gave an opinion about their thoughts about what is a teacher-centered and a student-centered strategy.

E

When I was in high school, we have a computer subject and then we are provide with a computer laboratory that is very comfortable to use. We are provided with individual computer, an air conditioned, white board, and there’s a teacher table. Each of us is given a chance to use computer and we are guided well by the instructions given by the teacher.

R

With the information exposed about the different strategies, it would be great if a classroom could provide not just a comfortable atmosphere but is very suitable for the interest of the learners. For example, if majority wanted to see a very simple and plain decoration inside the computer laboratory the teacher must not use a very expensive and complicated decoration. This lesson widens my understanding about the 2 strategies involved. I have also learned about its advantages and limitations that helped me weigh what’s the best strategy to use in order to come up with an effective learning outcome.

A

As a future educator, I would use the student-centered strategy where I could give a chance for my learners to work independently and discover their own skills through learning. Applying the 21st century learning approach, I will be using PowerPoint presentation for my discussion and my students will help me discuss the following points by the ideas they raised as our learning progresses. I will also associate the use of computers individually and design a very conducive classroom.

E

Overall, this topic  21st century learning environment deals about the teacher-centered strategies and students-centered strategies in the classroom which was experienced by the learners in different ways. Both strategies are said to be the main root of how classroom discussion takes place. Thus, a very good example of a learning environment is where a student can both find comfort and fits interest.

Engaging Learners with Computer

C

Nowadays, computers have become one of the key instructional technologies in education. To able to use computer effectively, one must be very familiar about the different applications that includes word processing, graphics, presentation software and more. During the discussion, the students engaged in sharing of ideas about their knowledge/opinions about computer uses.

E

I started using and owning my own computer when I was 13 years old, the first time operates it I was a little bit ignorant about its functions and applications. On the other hand, my little brother started using and mastering computer when he was just 6 years old and his knowledge about computer continually grows that he seems to be very addicted to it. If i were try to compare my experience with my brother that would be a very great difference upon knowing that kids today really experienced the advancement of technologies

R

The use of computers inside the classroom now has its strategies and approaches. Thus, computers really become one of the most effective tools for learning to be enriched and deepen. As students experience computer then they would fully interact with it and would work individually. Another thing would be- the use of computers must also be limited for the reason that there may be an effective learning but there would also be a chance that young children would endanger their health due to the radiation that computer produces.

A

In the future, I would be using computers but I won't be very dependent to it to the extent that i would let my students interact with it in the whole range of time. I would divide the time in using computers and conducting activities for the students to interact with each other. I would use computer as a tool for presenting the lesson but the application and assessment would be for them to either use pen or paper or do a group activity. On this way I would be assured that I was able to balance well what's good and advantageous for them.

E

Computers have its advantage and disadvantages, there are different ways where we use and operate computers. Though it really has become one of the high lights nowadays, still there is a need for us to balance what's good and bad for our learners. The use of computers makes our work easier and presentable but we must be computer literate for us to effectively use it.

Connecting Learners using Web 2.0 Tools

C

The schools in the 21st century are now changing; they are no longer limited to different structures and resources of the building. Web 2.0 tools are online resources that are available to anyone wishing to use them target those skills and provide students with many types of learning opportunities beyond simple information access. During the discussion, there was a comparison between the Web 2.0(author +users updates) and Web 1.0 (author updates).

E

In my college days, I was able to use wikis and blogs as my reference to assignments and requirements. Also, I used the different open source Web 2.0 just like word processing in MS Word as one of my means in encoding requirements and projects. The use of word processing becomes very useful to me, especially in subjects that includes reporting’s and term papers.

R

The use of Web 2.0 tools is very essential inside the classroom setting. It gives a lot of advantages to both learners and teachers as it gives them the means to connect and communicate with each other. Web 2.0 tools means a lot especially because it offers open sources and collaboration website where people could work on and interact with each other. But as Web 2.0 becomes very known and useful, we must also consider the fact to protect our security mostly for our student’s sake because not all the time that we could be assure that it’s reliable and safe.

A

As a future educator the different open sources of Web 2.0 will be very useful to me, most especially in my presentation and reports. I will also be applying the means of using online audio and video for me to really integrate learning to my students. I will provide my learners with the different ways to access information and share their knowledge I will be guiding them to the appropriate resources for them to enable an effective learning and cause no harm with their security by also providing tips.

E

To sum it up, the use of Web 2.0 tools would be very advantageous to both learners and teachers. But as the topic mentioned, we must always consider the security of our learners as future educators. There may be a lot of collaboration websites, but not all of it are reliable thus we must appropriately choose what’s right and best.

I.N Entry 7

Connecting Learners at a Distance

C

One of the greatest advantages offered by modern technology is the ability to instruct without the presence in classroom. Learners could learn on their own convenience with ease and comfort. During the discussion, there was a thorough discussion about how distance learning influences the 21st century.

E

When i started entering college, learning has become easier and more convenient with me. Having an internet source and television made me come up with my reports at ease. The first time i reported on our educ subject, I was able to conduct a thorough research about communication by means of using a computer and an internet source.

R

There are a lot of distance learning resources nowadays; with these educating the learners becomes more rapid and effective. Though 21st century brought us with the advancement of different gadgets, still one has to remember the limitations that these things would brought. When teaching at a distance there are many issues that needs to be considered, therefore the teacher must need to do a thorough research before he/she would give a task to the students by means of using distance learning. Also, in meeting the objectives the teacher should always consider the availability of resources and quality experience. Thus, distance learning is quite very useful and effective to the learners throughout the world.

A

Since the students in distance learning are expected to be spending their time outside the classroom, as a future educator I will let them engage in an individual and group work. By means of doing an individual work I could be able let them learn independently as for them to develop learning on their own. While as a group work, they could develop cooperation as they strive to work as a team and also engage in communication.

E

As a sum, distance learning really made the learner's life better and easier. By means of promoting it, teachers are given a chance to share their knowledge in a distance as well as learners gain from it.

I.N Entry 8

Visuals in the Classroom

C

There are 2 types of visuals: non projected and projected. Non projected visuals do not require equipment to view while projected visuals are media formats that are enlarged and displayed on a screen. During the discussion, there were cited examples of the two types of visuals including its advantages and disadvantages.

E

In my elementary and high school years, I was able to experience using the different non projected visuals just like bulletin, charts, and model. But when I started to enter college, I then was introduced to the projected visuals wherein most of our reports and discussions are shown on screen. These visuals then, brought me to the idea that 21st century is really different from our times.

R

Using visuals in the classroom should have a guide and consideration as to how it'll be use. Because teachers are mostly the one creating and designing it, they should be very careful in choosing it. Though visuals are to be made creatively, there's still a limitation as to what extent its creativity would be. Most of the learners are visual; therefore whatever they see would always mean a lot to them. Visuals in the classroom would be very effective if the teacher knows what and how he/she'll use.

A

As a future educator, I will be very careful in choosing my visuals inside the classroom. I would also ask my students opinions as to how and what I will be designing in order for it to be more fun and real. Then I will always update my bulletin boards, that it should be design in connection to a certain occasion or event.

E

Thus, visuals in the classroom are very important aids for the learners. As teacher would choose what best visuals are, learners should also be given a chance to engage. Visuals in the classroom would only be effective if it is properly created and made creatively.

IN Entry 9

Enhancing Instruction using Audio

C

The use of audio as a tool for enhancing learning becomes very efficient inside the classroom. In applying such, there is what we called “The hearing-listening process” that includes: Encoding, Hearing, Listening, and Decoding. During the discussion there was a thorough differentiation about Listening (Psychological) and Hearing (Physiological).

E

During our ENG 17 class last year, we were so much exposed with the use of audio as a tool in improving our phonological skills. We conducted our everyday classes at the speech lab, so we are taught how to use the different audio devices present there. The teacher would say the word and with a headphone we would be able to hear it and often times we do an oral drill individually.

R

Audio becomes very important everywhere especially in the field of teaching. Though there are some limitations in using it, still audio is very useful in every class discussion or presentations. Teachers, students, anyone can make use of audio- if people knows how to use and make it then it will be very effective for one’s sake.

In the future I will be using audio to deepen my discussion and to let my learners develop their capacity in hearing & listening. Whenever I want to emphasize the topic given, I will be giving examples for it to further be understood in such way that I will be using audio. Audio then will be a very important tool in my discussion, I would be using it and the learners would also enjoy hearing it so more likely they’ll not get to hear just my voice but also other voices in the form of using audio.

E

Audio then involves one’s capacity of hearing & listening, inside a classroom setting it is very important to apply both of these. Audio then contributed a lot in the field of teaching; teachers get to use it while the learners benefited from it. Thus, anyone can make use of audio not just in the form in entertainment, fun, but also it can be a means to learning and discovering.

IN Entry 10

Enhancing Learning through Video

C

In involving video as a tool for instruction, one must consider Video literacy that is the knowledge and skills in knowing how to view, make, and use video. Using video inside the classroom also gives an avenue for introducing topic, reviewing, remediation, deepening, and enrichment. During the discussion, the video and the 4 learning domains (cognitive, affective, psychomotor, and interpersonal) are given and deepened.

E

In our FFP classes before we always use videos to deepen our lesson, the teacher would assign us to the AVR and watch different films and documentaries. We often do it inside the classroom through film viewing as the teacher would want us to refresh and review certain topics that we had. In particular, videos are used in documentaries in order to portray real life situations for students to be aware about certain happenings.

R

The use of video is very important inside the classroom; it teaches the learners more and emphasizes the topic. It serves as a transportation where learners could explore and even could be given a chance to travel the entire globe. Video helps a teacher to make the class fun, attentive and understandable- through videos the learners could really get main ideas just by watching videos.

A

In the future, I will be using videos to let my learners explore and be attentive all the time. I will be searching for best videos that will help me emphasis the topic well and to deepen it more. Also, because I ‘am an English major- I will be letting my learners take tour in the different ages of literature not just by mere discussions but to let them explore through watching videos.

E

Thus, video is very important in teaching- aside from getting the attention of the class it gives venue for teachers to further discuss their topics just by watching videos. It let both the teachers and students benefit out form it and everyone who uses video discovers messages in each. Each message that is portrayed let the watchers to realize it and often times would get a moral lesson form it.
